I love to incorporate seasonal items within my lessons. I think everything seasonal is so much fun and when you can use candy for math manipulatives, it definitely makes for a FUN lesson!
I mentioned in my previous post (you can find it here) that we have been doing a lot of comparing numbers by telling which is greater than, less than, or equal. I picked up a bag of candy corn and candy pumpkins so that my students could do some comparing! I gave my students a mix of candy corn and candy pumpkins in a brown paper bag. They had to reach in and pull out a handful of candy. Then, they sorted out their candy by candy corn and candy pumpkins. They they had to complete the blanks to tell which was greater than and which was less than the other. *Helpful tip: Cut some of the top off of the paper bag. I just think this makes it so much easier for kindergarten hands to reach in the bag!
I gave some groups this mat which only had the greater than sentence to complete. This was an easy way to differentiate the lesson for my students.
And if they pulled out an equal amount of candy corn and candy pumpkins they wrote the number in the middle. My kids get so excited when something is equal!
I have created this as a FREEBIE for you to use with your students. Just click the image below to download.
*Within the document you will find a variety of mats so that you can differentiate based on student needs. You will also find 2 different exit tickets to use with your students to check student understanding. Enjoy!
Oh my gosh! I adore this. What a great way to incorporate math skills with autumn goodness!
